Whether outside in nature, or sitting in a vase on your dining table, flowers are beautiful. And they are a wonderfully portable piece of the outside world that can easily brighten up the inside where you may be forced to sit for hours at a time as you work.

They are also often one of those “romantical” or otherwise thoughtful gifts bestowed upon us by another. Sometimes we can get to the point of thinking that if there is no “special” day that we are celebrating, or if we haven’t received them from someone else, that having flowers in the house is not necessary, is a waste, or is not somehow “deserved”. But by thinking this way we are depriving ourselves of one of the simple joys of life, and for no reason!

I say, remind yourself that this is a “special” day. Treat yourself to a token of your affection toward yourself, and decorate your home with a bright spot of natural beauty 💐. Buy yourself some flowers, and do it regularly!

Old Ways

I grew up in a home that was always strewn with vases of wildflowers picked from our yard. I love this type of decoration, and if you have access to flowers outside that you can pick, this is the way to go! But I think that because of this I’ve often avoided buying flowers. Where I live now does not have a big yard with flowers to pick, so I’ve let my home go drab and undecorated for far too long.

New Habits

I decided early this year, after I did buy some flowers to celebrate a special event, to continue doing so very frequently throughout at least this year.

For one thing, I am going through a difficult period and it is important to do small things that will lift my spirits and will feel like self-care. For another thing, this year actually is pretty “special” for me. I’m focusing on essentially bringing myself back to life and freedom, so I want to celebrate that all year long!

And quite frankly, it’s easier for me to focus and make the best of each day when the house is pretty and there’s a reminder of life’s joy sitting right there on the table.

As a result, having flowers in the house is helpful to me in my efforts to remember to feel gratitude at what I have. The spruced-up environment helps me, without even thinking about it, to remember to seize the moment and enjoy life as it is right now.

Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.

Where to Get Flowers

You can, of course, buy fully-made bouquets from florists shops and online flower delivery services. Sometimes this is a perfect solution, but it can get pricey over time. If you’re thinking like me and you’d like to make this a regular thing, keep in mind there are almost always small bunches of flowers you can buy at the supermarket when you go to pick up your groceries. Even better, you can pick up some flowers at a farmer’s market, if there is one convenient to you.
